Support Questions: Wireless Connectivity
CONNECTION DIFFICULTIES

What you do depends upon the particular WiFi device you have and on the condition of your computer. If your computer is otherwise behaving normally, try these steps when a connection becomes weak or erratic:

  • Unplug the radio from its power source and plug it back in again (for USB devices, the power source is the USB cable connection, either end).
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Try moving your radio around to achieve a better signal. Maybe even tape it up in a window. Consult our map to learn the locations of hotspots near you -- if possible, find a hotspot you can see from your device's location, and point the radio in that direction.
  • If you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, is the phone ringing causing the problem? If so, try a 900 MHz or 5.8 GHz phone instead.
  • Are there other wireless devices in your household that could be setting up interference?
  • Has the cord connecting to your wireless device become loosened or damaged?
  • Consult the documentation of your particular WiFi device. Make sure you're connected to one of our hotspots (SSID MightyMoose or MightyMoose2)
  • Make sure that the device you're using to connect is the only enabled network device on your computer, and that the network TCP/IP is set to obtain an address and DNS server automatically.
  • If the problem is chronic, consider upgrading your wireless equipment.

Please realize that even though you may have purchased your WiFi device from us (at our cost), it is your responsibility to maintain it in good working order, and to replace it if it fails.

WIFI SETTINGS

To connect to Mighty Moose wirelessly, the following are required:

  • Your WiFi device set to connect to SSID MightyMoose or MightyMoose2 (that's case sensitive, with no spaces).
  • Your WiFi device set to obtain a TCP/IP address and DNS server address automatically (via DHCP).
  • Your Wifi device set for Infrastructure mode (not AdHoc).

We'll need to know the hardware address of your device to properly authenticate you.

BEING ASKED TO LOG IN

If you have a wirless account with us and only see our "splash" (login) page when attempting to surf the net, we have somehow not properly authenticated your equipment. (Have you installed new or different equipment?) Please phone us for assistance.

CAN'T SEND E-MAIL

If you can surf the Web and receive e-mail but not send it, the cause is one of two things:

  • Your sendmail server setting has changed (see E-Mail settings, at left)
  • Or, you're not connecting to a MightyMoose hotspot.

If your neighbors have an unsecured wireless router in their home and are connecting to the Internet via DSL, you may be piggy-backing onto their router. Consult your radio's documentation to be sure you are connecting to a hotspot with a MightyMoose or MightyMoose2 SSID.

Remember, if you are online (that is, able to surf the web), you can always click on Web Mail above to see the mail on our server waiting to be delivered to you, and you can send mail from there as well. Be sure to log in with your full email address as your user name and your password.
