ABOUT SPAM

SPAM is unwanted, junk e-mail. It's a problem throughout the Internet and is very difficult to detect and control.

Mail arriving for our customers is initially passed through a SPAM and virus detection appliance. Mail the machine believes to be SPAM is labeled "PROBABLY SPAM." In most e-mail programs, you can create a Message Rule to filter for those words in the subject line and treat it differently from other mail -- you decide how.

Bear in mind that any SPAM filtering done by a computer is subject to dumb machine sensibilities, not human scrutiny. It's difficult to create machine rules to identify SPAM. So machines make errors.

PREVENTING SPAM

The best way to prevent SPAM is to keep your e-mail address private. Avoid entering it into web sites. Obtain a free e-mail account on Yahoo or Hotmail and use it for this purpose.

If you do receive an unwanted message, do not be tempted to follow the "unsubscribe" procedure mentioned. This merely affirms that your address is real and that you read your mail. It only increases your spam.

I'M CAREFUL WITH MY ADDRESS
HOW HAVE I ATTRACTED SPAM?

Many kinds of computer infections harvest addresses from the address books stored on personal computers. If one of your correspondants has been so affected (usually without even knowing it), your address may have been harvested there.

SPAM REMEDY #1

Before downloading your new mail, use the Web Mail link above to view it on the server. Hit the Purge link in the left column on that page to empty the trash folder (where all labeled SPAM is automatically stored when you open Web Mail). Place check marks next to any unwanted messages in your Inbox, and hit the Delete button.

SPAM REMEDY #2

Create Message Rules in your computer's e-mail program. You'll find them under Tools > Message Rules > Mail in Outlook Express. Or, Tools > Rules Wizard in Outlook.

SPAM REMEDY #3
